Spray Tan Safety

Recent news stories have said that spray tanning “may pose health risks”. We would like to talk about these issues straight up. Brazil Bronze has been a pioneer in the spray tanning industry since 2002. We use our own specific brand of sunless tanner. We have always maintained the highest health and safety standards for our clients. We are listening carefully to all the newest data and we would like to give you our thoughts on the information.

A while back ABC Nightline asked us to be involved on a story about the sudden popularity of spray tanning. We were getting ready to shoot the segment when someone sent us an email telling us that ABC was working on an undercover story about the safety of spray tanning. At that time I immediately called the producer and said to her that I would be happy to speak on camera because I was very familiar with all the reports on DHA and I try to keep abreast of all the latest safety recommendations. At that time my partner Joy and I had gone to great trouble to have our DHA fully tested for importing into Europe. The safety standards are so much higher in Europe we literally had to go through the most rigorous testing and we had the full data on hand, including test results on inhalation, swallowing, DHA as absorbed through various methods of spray tanning (HVLP versus spray booths). We felt comfortable that all the data on our product (which is Eco Cert Approved) showed that the product, even when used for spray tanning is safe. AND FAR SAFER, COMPARITVELY TO THINGS USED FOR BEAUTY EVERYDAY. Despite the fact I told the producer I had really fresh data she never called me back. When I watched the  show it was the typical shots of kids working in salons. ABC just wanted the workers in the salon to look dorky – and kind of presented it like everyone who spray tans is an escapee from The Jersey Shore. ABC say they used ten different studies on which their evidence is based. I am waiting for the producer to specifically reference which studies they are using, because I have all the latest, major studies on my desk and they don’t say the same as the hype I heard on that show. I will give you a great example: in one story I read some “expert” said that when DHA was tested on human cells in a petri dish it caused “mutations.” However – WHAT THEY DID NOT MENTION WAS THAT THERE WAS ALSO A SCIENTIFIC CONTROL PETRI DISH WHERE A NEUTRAL, HARMLESS SOLUTION WAS PUT ON CELLS AND MUTATIONS ALSO OCCURED IN THAT PETRI DISH. To me, that is selective, inflammatory reporting. I mean both sets of cells changed – but by saying one set of cells, the ones treated by DHA mutated – that makes you think something terrible happened. The same thing happened to cells in the control. This kind of reporting is so low brow. It manipulates our minds. It creates hype for hypes sake.

DHA has been approved for sunless tanning since the 1950’s. Once spray tanning evolved, some reports mentioned that DHA could cause sensitivity to the eyes, nose and mucous membranes. DHA had widely been reported not to be carcinogenic.

For the average client who comes in a few times a year, or even once a week, the exposure is so minimal. The average client just closes their eyes and in ten years we have never had a client complain of any eye irritation. However, we do not take any risk lightly, so we do have eye goggles, nose plugs and paper underwear to protect all mucous membranes.

When we receive our sunless tanning solution from our lab, it comes with an MSDS (Manufacturers Safety Data). This is a form that accompanies chemicals when they travel, in case of any spill on the way. On the MSDS for Brazil Bronze DHA it says “no mask or gloves required.” Nevertheless, we have always used common sense. We are spraying a tinted product into the air. We obviously did not want to inhale it on a daily basis. Since our salon opened in 2002, my staff and I have always used masks when spraying. It is a rule that our employees must wear a mask. To me that is just common sense.

Every year we are told that something or other “may” pose risks. A great example is hair dye: where you are putting chemicals right on your scalp and leaving it to soak in for 40 minutes. On my desk as I write I have two tubes of toothpaste – Crest Kids and Colgate, something probably every family uses everyday. On the kids toothpaste it says, and I quote: “Keep out of reach of children 6 and under. If more than used for brushing is swallowed, get medical help or contact a poison control center right away.” Fluoride is highly carcinogenic yet we put it in our mouths at least twice a day. Every time I go to a restaurant I seem to be assaulted by wait staff spraying Windex on tables around me. Ammonia is another highly toxic substance we inhale every day. In life there are risks all around, and I personally think that DHA, which for years has been reported as not carcinogenic, is far less of a hazardous substance than hair dye or toothpaste. Like everything in life, the smart thing is to use moderation and take steps to protect your self.  If you are worried about sensitivity or inhaling, use the goggles, nose plugs and paper underwear. Even if you come in to get sprayed on a weekly basis your risk is so minimal compared to the many environmental hazards you face every day. Using deodorant is also supposed to be a hazard.  I would bet any money that you are more likely to die from a brain tumor using your cell phone and putting radiation against your brain that from being in contact with DHA.

At Brazil Bronze we have always thought carefully about what we put in our product. We have always been cogniscent that we were spraying something into the air that could be inhaled. For that very reason we never offered sprays to prep the skin or to seal the tan. To us, when we heard other salons offered that, we thought it was a bogus way of charging clients more without respect for safety. Our DHA is made for us, we have small batches of very fresh DHA, which is why our product doesn’t smell, and if you look at the ingredient list, which you may see in the salon on request, the ingredient list is simple. We strongly believe that we have a safe product because we have been using it for ten years without incident. We care deeply about the safety of our clients and staff and we listen carefully to all the latest recommendations.  Every day we are told to worry about something new. We stand behind our product; we have used it safely for ten years. We have every safety measure in place so you can have a worry free experience and continue to enjoy a safe tan.
