As summer comes to an end….

I can hardly believe that it is about to be September. Summer at Brazil Bronze always flies by. For most regular people in New York summer weekends are spent going to the Hamptons or the Jersey shore – if you are a spray tanner your summer is spent helping to make other people look good in their swimsuits!

This summer I personally had a couple of pretty interesting adventures. The first one is a kind of surreal story. I used to own this really wonderful horse. His name was Solstice and I had bought him from the Claremont Riding Academy back in 1990. When I first set eyes on this horse I fell in love with him. He was a pale cream palomino with four white socks, a white mane and tail and a very unusual white blaze on his face. The first time I rode him it was like he really understood me and was listening to me. In the Claremont Academy Solstice was living in a standing stall – he couldn’t turn around or lie down – I vowed to get him out of there and make a  better life for him. For the next seven years I had some really beautiful times with this horse. I went everywhere with him – and he taught me so much. My overall impression was that this horse was long suffering of me and patient.

In 1997 I had a lot of change in my life. I got divorced and I wasn’t able to keep Solstice. I had friends who had retired a horse to someone in Maryland. These people told me that they had a little girl who was a 4Her and that Sostice would be kept as a pet. I believed tham and I am ashamed to say I let the horse go to them and I didn’t keep proper track. I assumed he was OK.

Fast forward to last year. I was walking in Central Park with my two little girls – I see Solstice pulling a carriage. I literally froze in my tracks and felt my heart drumming in my ears. I walked over to the guy driving the carriage and struck up a conversation. Somehoworother I managed to be calm and civil and didn’t react how I was feeling. He was an Irish guy called Connor. He had bought the horse from these people who had promised to keep Solstice as a pet. I ran my eyes over him and saw that despite all of my fears and anxiety – he actually looked in good shape. He was a good weight and had no sore places from his harness – his shoes and feet looked good. I looked the horse in the eye and silently appologised to him.I gave the driver my card and told him that this had been my horse and I didn’t want anything bad to happen to him. I actually felt so painful and sorry inside.

When I got home I tried to track down this woman who had taken Solstice – or any of the people who I had known from that period of time who might be able to help me. I didn’t have a paper trail. I spent alot of time feeling very uncomfortable about this whole mess and not knowing how to fix it.

A few weeks ago I got a call from this Irish driver Connor. He told me the horse is very old (by my reckoning he must 25 or so). I asked if I could see the horse so I could figure out what kind of retirement options would be possible for him. He told me that the horse is in Pennsylvania living with a memonite farmer who doesn’t have a phone. He told me he was planning to bring the horse to the city in October for one final round of carriage pulling and then the horse has to find a home. I asked for the address of the farmer.

In my heart I was figuring let me find a home for solstice – and then pursuade the Irish guy to just let Solstice go to the new home – please no more carriage pulling for him.

So – with just an address and a prayer – me and my daughter Georgie – and my friend Naidys who works with me @ Brazil Bronze – we set out for Pennsylvania dutch country to find Sosltice (by the way the Irish guy now calls him Goldfinger.)

We drove for hours and got horribly lost – then we arrived in this magically beautiful countryside. It was like going back in time. We saw a lady in a long black gown and a bonnet driving a tractor barefoot. We were afraid to ask for directions – but she was actually very nice and very shy. Finally we arrived at this old red barn. I knocked on the farm door – no reply or sign of life. Then I looked accross into the barn and I saw my old boy Solstice standing right there. I went into the barn and stood up close to him and put my nose on his neck and smelled his beautiful smell. I put my hand under his mane – that was very long and very thick – and scratched him and talked to him. He is very old and he looked at me with his same old eyes. There was a clatter of hooves and two plough horses drove up to the barn – looking like something from 150 years ago. I met the farmer who is currently taking care of Solstice. He seemed like a decent guy. I was actually talking to him for ages – he had many horse stories. So anyway – the horse was ok – not great – but I saw what the reality was – and now I have to deal with it.

I got back home and have been on the phone ever since. I am trying to find somewhere for Solstice to go where he will be safe and taken care of. I am trying to make ammends for something I obviously didn’t handle very well the first time round. So – this has taken up a lot of my summer. I am hoping that I can get this squared away in the next week or so. In my dreams he will be somewhere in NJ where I can visit regulary and try to make it up.

My other summer adventure has been in complete contrast. This fall my husband Alex and I have devised this pretty wacky plan. We are planning to take a group of 8 women – who haven’t really danced – and teach them this whole mambo routine to perform in front of a live audience at this big dance weekend at the end of October. Everyone sees these shows like Dancing with the Stars and everyone I know says – Oh I wish I could do that – I wish someone would take me and make me over – and I could get into shape and wear the sexy dress and dance the fabulous dance……so I thought to myself – why not. So everything is planned and ready for action. The rehearsal space is rented. Alex and I have been working like lunatics trying to put this dance together – so in September and October it will be in a teachable format. It has been a pretty intense project. So now we are getting ready for the relity of two months of rehearsals with these ladies – and the whole emotional rollercoaster we are about to ride with them in order to get everyone ready for the big day. I know it is going to be an adventure.

Next week – right after labor day we are going to the United States Dancesport Championships in Orlando. Our whole family goes every year and we are very excited. We are excited to see friends from all over the world, we are excited to cheer on our friends, I am not sure if I am excited to spray tan – but excited or not – I will be spray tanning…..and I am sure the kids will get to see Mickey Mouse….(truth be told the children are not too excited by Ballroom dancing…..)

So that’s my summer. Oh and one final bit of gossip. A couple of weekends ago I went to see my friend Eddie Simon’s ballroom dancing competition in NYC. Sitting accross the way was Heather Mills (Paul McCartney’s ex.) She was surprisingly beautiful in real life – much more pretty than she looks in the media. Her little girl was running around being a loon. At one point during the actual competition – the child ran accross the competition floor and was nearly stampeded to death by a herd of Latin dancers. Jonathon Roberts – the guy Heather Mills danced with in Dancing With The Stars – ran onto the competition floor and scooped up the child before she was trampled half to death.

Hope y’all have a great holiday weekend.
