Snowed in!

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Every year my dancing friends, and I, have made it an annual tradition to celebrate the holidays at a Russian night club in Brighton Beach. As the snow started to fall last Sunday, the night of our annual party – I thought that the weather man was lying. They are always forcasting the blizzard of the century – and generally nothing ever happens.

I should have known that something was astray when 2 taxis broke down before I had even gone two miles from my home…but I am a very determined party goer, and I was damned if a light dusting of snow was going to stop my revelry. I was very interested to see if anyone besides me and my husband would actually show up.

I should add that in my brilliance I was wearing fishnet tights, a dress, a small festive coat, snowboots – and had heels in my handbag.  It was quite bracing as the flakes of snow danced on my legs.

An hour or so later we arrived at Tatiana, a famous nightclub in Brighton Beach – that is like a scene from a Russian movie. Everyone is Russian and it is very colorful people watching. Russian ladies like to dress very flashy, the more designer logos visible on an outfit the better. If you could wear Dolce and Gabana, Versace, Dior at the same time – and lots of sparkles and bling – then you are on the right track. Vodka is on the table like water. All the waiters speak to you in Russian because they just presume that if you are there you must be Russian. I love it – I feel like I am in a different time and place.

My friends didn’t dissappoint me – every single person who was supposed to be there – managed to battle the blizzard – and get to their assigned seat at the party table. It was a very special group of people to me – all of my ballroom dancing friends. I feel very close to them – because we see one another day in and day out at the studio, and spend many weekends on the road together at the various competition – we have a lot of shared history. Little did we know we were about to add another chapter.

Yes! It was a really fun party… The wine flowed – the food was more elaborate than anything you could imagine, there was dancing, laughing festivity, lots of subverse commentry during the show – happy times. Somewhere around 2am, tipsy and bleary eyed we started to say our good byes.

We went out to get the cars that had been valet parked – only to find about 2 feet of snow and the wanker-ish parking attendant giving us the car keys and pointing us in the direction of the outdoor lot. The wind was howling, snow was falling down by the bucket load, the ocean of Brighton Beach was crashing and a Tsunami of snow kept flooding onto us from the beach.

But I was still in a festive party mood. Fishnets be damned, I skipped through the thigh high sparkly (bloody cold) snow – intent on helping my friend Robert dig out his car. The wind and snow shook me from every side. I remembered the many years when I worked at the riding stable – I was accustomed to sleeping at the barn on snow days – and doing a lot of digging. I know myself to be a hearty digger.

When we got to the parking lot it was a nightmare. So much snow. so many snowed in cars. It was like a rubicks cube that was not going to be solved. Even if we could muster the energy, amidst the howling blizzard, there was no way we would ever get the car out. Someone checked the i-phone – *uck! the subways were down – no chance of getting back to the relative sanity of NYC…What to do. Huddling under my festive coat I shivered, legs soaking wet and freezing we blundered back to the nightclub. Some nasty security guard who thought we were back in the USSR told us we had to get out – his job was finished and he wanted to go home. What the hell were we to do.

We stood in the alley outside the club, we had a half a bottle of vodka left, and my russian friends made frenzied phone calls. I will say Brighton Beach looked awsome and awe inspiring. The snow on the beach was majestic – magnificent. I was slightly worried that I was having problems keeping some members of our party in a vertical position….

Finally – a stroke of luck. My friend Eddie managed to wake up his elderly mom and dad – they are very russian and lived nearby – in the hood. We pulled up our coats around our ears. We had only a couple of blocks to go – but the wind and snow whipped us so savagely – I could hardly stand up.

Eddie’s parents are delicious. I felt like I was in a scene from Seinfeld (if they had a russian edition.) His dad is 80 – his mom is adorable. They could not have been better sports. There were 9 of us and we squuzed ourself onto their living room rug – with much laughing a hilarity. It was kind of like playing Twister – we could not have been more tightly crammed in. These poor little old russian people were looking at us, bleary eyed – in their dressing gowns – doling out every blanket and cushion they could find.

I tried to sleep on the floor. God – there was a lot of snoring. The image of a dogs home in the North Pole came to mind. You had to be really careful not to roll onto someone else. The sea crashed, and the wind thrashed on the roof tops – snow was driving hard and fast on the windows. Finally I went to sleep.

When we woke up – the snow was even higher. Still no subway service. We could see the elevate track at a stand still and two snow ploughs defeated in the street. The russian relatives made us tea and were thoroughly kind – and they gave us the most delicious cheese sandwhiches and chocoates for breakfast. I have never been more grateful to be issued a cup of tea.

My friend Annamarie is super practical. She hiked up her party dress and bundled up and went foraging in the snow for supplies – returning from the Value store with a bumper pack of ladies underwear and tooth brushes. The lord be praised – what can’t be accomplished once you have clean underwear and freshly brushed teeth?

And so the day went on. We could not dig the car out. We got rescued by more russian relatives – who offered us more amazing russian hospitality. We had chinese food and watched Sex in the City 2 – which I hadn’t seen yet. Finally, when the bridges and tunnels opened – late yesterday – more than 24 hours after the party started – someone gave us a ride home.

Oh my…! I don’t think I have ever been happier to take a bath and crawl under my cosy duver. But I wouldn’t change a thing. It was a great party – and all the cups of tea in the various russian homes were priceless – what a snow day experience – it will live in my memories forever. Thank you Lana and Eddie for your love and kindness and your amazing family 🙂

This has been the most whirl-wind holiday season ever. When I come into the salon and see our adorable pink holiday tree – it is so comforting and consistent. that tree has been with us since the beginning and has seen 9 Christmases.

The craziness struck for me on December 1st. I had started a new workout for women called Burlesque Bikini Bootcamp and on December 1st I was lucky enough to have my class passes sold on Groupon. Overnight we sold over 8000 class passes and went from busy to insane. Part of the frenzy was because on that particular day there was talk of Groupon being bought by Google – so as well as getting a ton of excited new students we got calls from allsorts of international business press who were trying to understand the power of Groupon.

As well as our regular classes we have had special “Santa Baby” workshops where we taught a sexy burlesque strip to the song Santa Baby. We had so much fun choosing our outfits – let me tell you, the whole world must be dressing as sexy santa’s helper – because there are so many outfits to choose from. We teach all our classes in Chelsea Studio – and Brazil Bronze has practically taken over there – Joy is teaching her amazing self defense for women workshops – and of course we have all of our boudoir photography and Dating 911 classes and shoots too.

Last tuesday we had an amazing benefit party at Madame X on Houston Street – to raise money for my favourite children’s charity House of Loveness. We had a super fun show featuring the legendry burlesque performer Kitty Cavalier, the gorgeous Omayra, Mai – the Pole Minx – and of course myself and Pink Champagne. It was a fabulous party for a great cause.

Then on Friday – it went from the absurd to the ridiculous – I went with my husband Alex Tchassov – to perform a ballroom show at an old people’s home in Long Island. My good friend Annamarie and I agreed to dance one burlesque number to the song “Fever”. It was so cute to see the residents reaction. they loved it!!

This weekend was finally time to do christmasy things with the family. Let’s just forget about the little incident where the booking software for Burlesque Bikini Bootcamp crashed and I had 42 people dancing to “baby it’s cold outside”…

I had a lovely drive with my friends to a christmas tree farm in NJ and chopped an adorable tree with a Dr Seuss wiggly top… singing to the radio with the kids all the way. then on Sunday off to ice skating where Santa made an appearance. I am afraid he was a faker – I saw the elastic under his ear. I promised Charlotta and Georgiana that we will go and see the real one in Macy’s this Thursday….

Now – let me get back to a little more shopping…

Give yourself a spanking new bottom for Christmas!

One of the great things about getting older is that as my eye sight becomes more and more retarded – when I look at my back side in the mirror it actually dosn’t offend me as much as when I was younger – because I see the world with a foggy soft focus. However, if I have my glasses on and am in one of those horrible, over-lit dressing rooms – the sight of my own nether-regions might make me scream and break into a cold sweat.

Anyway – great news for those of you with fat wobbly arses, myself included, my brilliant partner (business partner – she is not my amour) has written a book about cellulite and how to get rid of it. She is a trainer and fitness expert and she co-wrote it with some guy who is some sort of butt-guru. Fabulous! We all need a butt-guru – right?

The book is amazing. So juicy, so readable – and so many really practical, useful things I would never have even thought of. I really suggest that everyone grab a copy now – because right now there is a pre-sale and you can get it for only $4.95. Check it out @ www.brazilbronze.com/book

The way I see – the holidays are upon us – I am surrendering to the goodies a little bit – but I am keeping up my tough Burlesque Bikini Bootcamp workouts – and getting all my knowledge ready so I can reign myself firmly in in the new year!

A really great gift idea – or just get it as an investment for yourself. Here’s to a smokin’ hot booty in 2011.
