Halloween at Brazil Bronze

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Halloween at Brazil Bronze totally cracks me up. First of all it delights me to see grown ups plotting and planning who they are going to be with such care and precision. It has also taught me that you cannot judge a book by its cover.

I remember last year talking to this very corporate “looking” gentleman as he was getting changed. “so how would you like your color to be? Are you doing anything special for halloween”. To which he responded -” please make me very dark, I am being a disco angel”. Hmmmm what exactly is a disco angel. Well it sounds fabulous and is obviously very tan.

The last couple of years we had a lot of requests from people going to parties as Paris Hilton…I am so excited to hear what the big trends are going to be for 2009.

Most people want to dress up as something that is going to make them look good or sexy. I mean – have you seen the stuff they sell in Ricky’s – pretty much every costume is made by PlayBoy – so you pretty much need to show a little skin.

Don’t forget to think about having your eyelashes done by amazing expert Jane B – that is one sure way to look super gorgeous for any party or trick and treating plans!

Another exciting thing this year – if you forget to get your tan til right before your party or event – I now have a new fixative and can spray you right after getting the tan so it won’t come off on your costume (or your trick or treating companions!)

The last dance

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Since the middle of August I have been working on preparing a group of ladies, most of them beginner dancers, on their journey to perform a choreographed dance routine. The actual performance (in the Pocono mountains) just happened this past weekend.

The reason I first started getting this group together to dance – was because I saw that it would be a really fun, girl power activity. Grown women often don’t get big enough doses of that. Also – I knew that getting through the advanced obstacle course, both mental and physical – that learning and then having the courage to actually perform – was a really powerful life lesson. You have to really show up and be very patient in order to learn a complicated routine. You have to be brave to get all dressed up and put yourself out there and put on a show.

This time around I really recruited an incredible mix of women.  If you had told me the twists and turns this ride was going to take I would never have believed you. Since August we have had a camera with us and are going to create a documentary about these delicious, magnificent women and all of their stories that happened while they were rehearsing with us.

If anyone learned something from this – it was me. There were a lot of very courageous women in that room – and getting to spend hours rehearsing was really a privilege. For example – we had one lady who had at one point in her life been in a wheel chair, completely unable to walk –let alone dance. She had undergone complex physical therapy to re-learn how to walk. She was a huge lover of dance, and before her husband passed away quite a few years ago, she used to love going out dancing with him. It was her heartfelt desire to recapture the passion of dance in her life. Some steps that might seem quite basic to the average person – were really challenging for someone who had had to re train her neural pathways the basic procedure of walking. Every day she showed up – brave, positive – with the most lovable deep booming laugh and bright, cornflower blue eyes. I have never met anyone with a bigger can do attitude. One of my best moments of this weekend was when I got to see this lovely lady – dancing socially with various gentleman – smiling, laughing and not a care in the world. I actually almost cried it was so beautiful.

Another adorable young lady had been a musical child prodigy. Performing on the piano as a small child had left her with a terror of performing in public. This lady was a great natural dancer – extremely pretty and naturally charming. Would she freeze up under pressure or would she have the time of her life?

One lady was a mommy with two little children who had to spend hours traveling to rehearsal from deep in New Jersey. I think that she thought the whole process would be just fun. As it turned out the actual learning part in the classroom was often quite challenging. I could see her internally questioning herself – and she was really tough on herself. To add to her burden – all of the hours she spent away from her children made her really miss them. More than a few tears were shed. Was it going to be worth it for her? Could she get past her doubt? Another of my favorite parts of the weekend was seeing this lovely lady transformed. All weekend she was dressed to the nines for every party, totally radiant, happy and beautiful. She looked like a supermodel – not a trace of suburban mom to be seen. It was extra special as her husband came for the show and got to see her strutting her stuff and looking exceptionally beautiful.

This is just the tip of the iceberg (I can’t tell you all the really juicy stuff cos I want you to see the documentary when it is made ;-))!

At the end of the day we have had a really memorable adventure the past couple of months. The weekend was like a giant sleepover party. The actual performance was just so outrageously fun and adorable and good. Everyone had the craziest costumes – everyone got to really feed their fantasies and dress like showgirls. Every color of the rainbow, sequins, rhinestones, feathers, sparkles….

Of course it was over so quickly – but everyone did so good. We stayed up so late…dancing in conga lines, taking pictures of our fabulous selves – and then laughing into the wee hours watching the video of ourselves.

Thank you to my beautiful “Pocoho’s” for these magical memories. Everyone should get to be a Pocoho at some point in their life!
