On having my picture taken

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

I just had one of those “Only in New York” moments. I got an e-mail from a friend saying she knew of this photographer who was looking for English people who lived in New York who had interesting jobs/lives. She told me his photography was beautiful. So…. I didn’t look on his website, I just thought “what the hell” and shot the guy an e-mail. I said something like “my name is Sally and I was the first person spray tanning in NYC”. I generally like to do things on interesting tangents….

So last Friday this photographer called me. He said I sounded like a possible candidate and could he come and meet me. I was slightly mortified as he wanted to come over right then. I was wearing a really bad outfit, I had been planning to take a yoga class at ViraYoga in 580 Broadway – and everyone there is very dressed down. I once accidently wore a pink S Factor Hamptons shirt and make-up to class there and felt like a porn star compared to everyone else. You should dress for that class as if you were a ghurka hiking in the himalayas on a hot day.

Anyway….I digress. So the photographer and his partner came over. Two very nice English guys. But, oh my god, the plot really thickens. The thing that they are taking pictures for is an exhibition that they are planning to have in the National Portrait Gallery in London – along with an accompanying book – titled “An Englishman in New York”. So far they had taken photos of some regular people like me but they are also planning to do Sting, Kate Winslett and Anna Wintour. And I don’t think they were blowing smoke up my arse because when I did look on his website later he had pictures of a lot of pretty famous people.

So yesterday the photographer – his name is Jason Bell – came to take my picture. This part is actually quite funny. When I had been talking to the photographer previously he had surprised me – because generally, whenever I take a picture in Brazil Bronze, it is always a picture of me spraying someone. He told me that it was going to be a picture of me – no model – so there should be plenty of skin…..as that is kind of what my business is about. I had spent all weekend thinking what I should wear. I called all of my friends who have fashion sense. I spent more than five minutes worrying about it.

He said to me “what do people usually wear to get sprayed”

I answered “paper underwear”

“What is it like”

“It is very small…..like a piece of dental floss”

Well. I quickly nipped that idea in the bud. I think my comment was something akin to “you must be crazy – if you think I am going to all the trouble to have my picture taken with the hope of ending up in the National Portrait Gallery I don’t want all my relatives taking the train up to London to have the mortification of seeing me in a pair of paper underwear…..”

So we came up with the solution that I would wear a towel.

So – then I had the experience of having my photo taken by Jason Bell while wearing a towel. It was a pretty good experience. He is super nice – and super patient. I am really interested to see the pictures. Generally I only get to see my hand holding a spray gun in all pictures…..so the fact that someone actually photographed all of me was a momentous day for me.

Probably I should have been more bold and worn the paper underwear. I guess you could look at it two ways. If I had worn the paper underwear the picture might have been more arty and I might have a higher chance of not getting edited out of his collection. We shall see what the future holds!
