The gorgeous art of reinventing onself….

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

I have a friend in New York City who owns this amazing school called “Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts”. Her name is Regena Thomashauer and her school is all about using the power of pleasure to get what you want out of life. Truthfully her philosophies and the tools she teaches are so transformative and so much fun – everyone should read her books and take her classes……..Now – one of the “Womanly Arts” is called Owning Your Beauty. It is about learning to be comfortable in your own skin and really acknowledging the unique things about yourself – loving yourself as you are – small boobs, tremendous arse, whatever the lot nature has handed out to you Regena can really get into your head and get you learning to love yourself. I have personally really benefited from all of Regena’s exercises and I am so much more honoring of myself than I ever was when I was younger. Especially since I had kids – I am so amazed that the female body somehow or other gets itself pretty much back to where it came from. I feel really sad when people come in to get sprayed and they are really down on their bodies and hating where they are at. I remember being like that when I was younger and I know it is so painful……..

And so, because of this “owning your beauty” philosophy I have spent a few years working on seeing the beauty of my own very pale skin. I am truthfully ultra violet white. The truth is that in the winter I am better about enjoying my pallor…..but when the sun starts to shine and it’s time to wear summer stuff and god forbid put on a swimsuit…..I really don’t love looking like a piece of marble. Now some people carry it off really well. Dita Von Teese – I probably spelled her name wrong – she totally carries it off. I was wondering what people at my local swimming pool would think if I turned up in a highly corseted 1950’s bathing suit, hair in curls and bright red lips definitively pencilled on……..It might be interesting, it might be fabulous, but  it won’t happen anytime soon.
So I guess this is where I am at. I don’t hate being snow white. I can appreciate it. I can see the many splendid qualities of luxuriant pale skin. But sometimes it is so fun to play with another look. Over the Memorial Day weekend we were so busy at Brazil Bronze, we faux-glowed so many people with truthfully couldn’t give a rat’s arse about taking five minutes to spray a co-worker….so I had to show up to all the beginning of summer festivities looking like a ghost. This past weekend I didn’t really have any place that special to go – but I was determined to make the best of myself. I took the time and got my lovely co-worker Tamara to spray me – and the talented Jane B. to put eyelash extensions on me…and I’m telling you it was so much FUN. Its just nice to play around with a look, with a feeling – to pretend to be the sun-kissed golden girl. I really enjoyed wearing my summer clothes and felt a ton more comfortable wearing my swimsuit…..(I’m not sure truthfully whether it made those who saw me feel anymore comfortable) I say definitely own your beauty and work what you’ve got – but it is so totally worth it to make oneself over – make yourself into whatever part you feel like playing for the day or week or whatever. So I’m making a note to myself to try and take the time out to do a little something for myself. Summer is here and it’s OK to pretend!

Glow and gorgeousness in Forest Hills NY!

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

ast Tuesday, February 5th, was a very proud day for the Brazil Bronze family. We opened our new location at 70-19C Austin St, 2nd Floor – which – btw – is an amazing, sexy location! There are so many cool and happening stores and boutiques on Austin Street – I think BB will do great there. We kicked off with an amazing soiree. We played brazillian music, drank caipirinhas, had demos of spraying, eyelash extesions and airbrush make-up. Lucky for us the ultra cute models had quite a few caipirinhas and were more than happy to walk around in their smalls chatting to all the party guests – that has to be a sure fire way of adding to the success quotent of any party -eh? The new Forest Hills Brazil Bronze Glow Bar is owned and managed by Stephen Soterakis and Aura Gregory – the most beautiful lovely people you could wish to meet.

Now – to me – running a successful business is about having the ability to lavish love and attention on your clients – and I feel sure Stephen and Aura – with their combined brilliance and people skills are going to make us very proud. I also have to say an amazing wow to my team  – Joy Romano my business partner who found this incredible space and did so much leg work – and the ultra amazing and ultra fabuloso Annamarie and Roberto Ferrando – who built out and styled the space…….they did a rocking job – thank you and big kisses to y’all. We look forward to adding our little bit of chicness and sophistication to this corner of Queens!

Sally's girls in the snow

When I think back to the holiday seasons of my childhood – I remember my parents littering the air with allsorts of colorful expletives. While I looked forward to Christmas with desperate anticipation – my parents got more and more stressed. I totally couldn’t understand why they didn’t want to drive 4 hours huddled up in a volkswagon beattle to visit with the family. I also remember that was back in the day when people smoked in the car…….and even despite that I was desperate to make the trip.

But, now I’m a grown up with kids of my own I start to get it. It’s a lot of pressure. The shopping, the cooking, the parties – not wanting to disappoint little peoples fantasies – not wanting to miss anything out. It starts to be a bit of a slog. Then to make it even worse I hear some editor on TV from some life simplification magazine yakking away about how I should serve a frozen lasagna to everyone and wrap my gifts in a bit of brown paper bag and some yarn from the re-cycling dumpster. All this life simplification just seems to make everything even more complicated – it is better for me to just do something properly rather than  spending even more time working out how to simplify.

This year the festive madness seems to have started really early. I’ve already been to a tree lighting replete with reindeers to be petted, skating with Santa, too many movies of a holiday theme that my kids insist of wtching back to back – including at least five viewings of “Elf”…..and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular. The show was amazing but it practically gave me a heart attack sheilding my children from the ferocious geriatric crowd – it was like a free for all at a florida early-bird buffet……. I am so grateful for internet shopping – I am so slow to pick up on things that this is the first year I’ve really done it. How could I have not done this before…….

And parties…..normally  I make it to about the 20th of December before feeling this over indulged – I am definitely getting old – it is only December 6th and I feel like I need to go up a mountain and drink green tea for about a month. If only I could show some self restraint. I shall try to do better.

Last Sunday we woke up to a soft sprinking of snow. By my house we have a couple of little bunny hills. At around 9am my husband and I dragged our little girls through the snow on their little sleigh- it was just a dusting but because it was Sunday it hadn’t been driven over and dirtied up. We spent about an hour up and down the hill – my two year old was laughing just so delighted to be out in the first snow. That was what I call pure pleasure. 1 hour out of all the craziness and commotion – and seeing the little ones having a really great time. Do you remember being a kid – and being desperate to taste the snow, touch the snow, be one with the snow! I guess I’m not completely jaded after all!
