could there be a better place to spend thanksgiving than in NYC? I remember when I first moved to America back in 1987 I didn’t really understand the holiday. It seemed like a dress rehearsal for Christmas – with pumpkin pie thrown in.

But now, all these years later, and now that I have my own family, I love this holiday which gives us a chance to reflect on all the things I am thankful for.

This year I got to celebrate the holiday in style. I went with my husband and girls to the annual breakfast and parade watching fiesta at Per Se in the Time Warner building. My little girls got amazing seats on the window ledge overlooking Columbus Circle – and we had the perfect view of all the floats. Per Se had cooked so many delicious treats – the children were in love with all of the gourmet versions of regular cookies – and the servers were so gentile – letting the little girls choose whatever goodies they wanted. It felt so good to be in the centre of NYC, surrounded by friends, enjoying the view.

Next we went to thanksgiving number 2 at my parents home in NJ. Now my mother has been battling emphysema for the past three years and many holidays have been spent in the hospital. So the very fact that we were all at home gathered around the table together was not taken lightly. I am definitely blessed to have such a beautiful family, my parents are the kindest nicest people in the world, the little girls are adorable – and my husband is the best! So good to just be together and to take a moment to hold gratitude in your heart.

Then on to thanksgiving number 3….to our dear friends in Jersey City. My girls had the best time playing drums in the basement, playing monopoly, eating even more dessert…and for my husband and I chance to relax for a while and to reflect on another really great year. We had so much fun making new friends through our dance group, we are in the process of making our documentary, Brazil Bronze is in its’ 7th year of business, we have had so much fun with our family and friends, traveling to dance competitions, camping in the Adirondaks, taking the kids to Disney, getting to help House of Loveness in Zimbabwe….so many beautiful rich experiences to be thankful for…..

Ohio

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

I just got back from the Ohio Star Ball – probably the biggest ballroom dance competition in America. I got back on sunday and I am still shell shocked from the experience. First of all it takes place in the most enormous convention center – I was so sucked into it that I was there a whole seven days and did not step outside once. It is like a whole alternate reality mainly featuring very thin eastern europeans with strangely coloured, geometric haircuts. I guess everyone wants to grab your attention on the dancefloor – so they ask for crazy haircuts at malls accross America – and even when they have long given up dancing – they still hunger for whackadoodle haircuts. People wear a lot of animal print in their downtime too.

I spent most of my time spray tanning in a tiny tent. Some of my relatives were mining engineers back in Wales – and something about my experience of spray tanning in this tiny tent – in a yucky smoking suite – made me feel a strong bond with my fore fathers. I spray tanned, and spray tanned and spray tanned. You cannot put too much spray tan on a ballroom dancer.

A few times the security guard came to my room at night to complain about the racket I was making. I hastily shoved the girls who were drying their boobs with a hairdryer into the bathroom, kicked the guys and the spray tan tent into my closet, and answered the door with a sweet smile. “I am so sorry sir….I was just self tanning my legs for the dance competition….it won’t happen again”

The security guard looked at me like a strange oddity

“but what were you running in there”…..it did sound like I was riding around my smoking suite on a lawn mower……

And then in my down time I helped out some friends who make ballroom costumes. Squeezing abundant flesh into small amounts of lycra. “Oh yes…it’s supposed to be nice and snug”.  It was a crazy experience. I swear you could write a whole movie just about all the different vendors at that competition. The conversations I heard cannot be repeated in this family blog.

But the dancing was fabulous….and I feel quite sure I will be back for more next year.

Halloween at Brazil Bronze

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Halloween at Brazil Bronze totally cracks me up. First of all it delights me to see grown ups plotting and planning who they are going to be with such care and precision. It has also taught me that you cannot judge a book by its cover.

I remember last year talking to this very corporate “looking” gentleman as he was getting changed. “so how would you like your color to be? Are you doing anything special for halloween”. To which he responded -” please make me very dark, I am being a disco angel”. Hmmmm what exactly is a disco angel. Well it sounds fabulous and is obviously very tan.

The last couple of years we had a lot of requests from people going to parties as Paris Hilton…I am so excited to hear what the big trends are going to be for 2009.

Most people want to dress up as something that is going to make them look good or sexy. I mean – have you seen the stuff they sell in Ricky’s – pretty much every costume is made by PlayBoy – so you pretty much need to show a little skin.

Don’t forget to think about having your eyelashes done by amazing expert Jane B – that is one sure way to look super gorgeous for any party or trick and treating plans!

Another exciting thing this year – if you forget to get your tan til right before your party or event – I now have a new fixative and can spray you right after getting the tan so it won’t come off on your costume (or your trick or treating companions!)
