Happy New Year

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

It is that very specific time of the holidays. The house is a mess from being filled with children and new toys. The Christmas tree is exhausted and on its very last legs. The parties are over – and tomorrow is the day for getting back into the work mind set.

And forget about work – the real job is trying to strain your body back into your pants. So depressing.

So today I was wandering sadly around my house in my yoga pants researching diets online. I was looking at “the Master Cleanse” which Beyonce used to shed 20 pounds before dream girls. You drink this kind of tea of lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup 5 times a day. Lots of people have done this and swear it really works. The thing that turned me off was that you are supposed to drink a litre of tepid water with sea salt every day ….and then what comes next is not really good reading material for my wholesome blog. Let’s just say it was scatalogical and nasty. Millions of internet users describe in horrific detail things that you really are better off not knowing, since it leaves a really strong visual.

I will pass on the Master Cleanse right now and try to run a lot and not drink wine. We’ll see how long that lasts 😉

The salon is busy right now – which surprises some people. Loads of people are heading off to hot climates to escape the cold – and lots of people are depressed about looking at their white bottoms …they feel a modicum thinner and healthier with a little glow. And then there is the fabulous set who are trying out their looks for the upcoming Golden Globes. (So we have the “white cauliflower crowd” and “the golden globe crowd”…..all I can say is that at this time of year most of us could use a full team of stylists, spray tanners, make-up artists and hair artists – so we could walk out the house without shame.

And if the frigid weather makes you nervous to set foot out the door – we are happy to come to you – just give us a call. There is nothing like a quick spray tan to cheer you up – our hottest seller right now is “the cellulite annihilator” – caffeine, glycolic and copper peptides – will work wonders on your nether regions – and mine!

Abba fabulous

Monday, November 30th, 2009

My mind is preoccupied with everything Abba. I have two little girls ages 4 and 9 and they are so totally in love with the movie “Mama Mia!”…it was free on On Demand and we must have watched it 100 times. I ordered the soundtrack on itunes….and then I dug up my old Best of ABBA CDs.

And then, a definite sign from on high, the past two times when I went to get my hair done at Gerard Bollei who should be sitting incognito in the chair next to me…..Christine Baranski…..two times in a row. I am pleased to report she seemed super nice in person. Very polite to all the hired help and other hoy-polloy. Once she actually conversed with me about the weather. I am always deeply impressed by politeness in celebrities…and my own informal research has taught me is that the only people who are truly a pain in the *rse are reality tv people. I once had a terrible run in with one of the Bachelorrettes (not Trista) who actually said to me “Do you know who I am…..?” I nearly wet myself.

But I digress.

So recently I have been playing a ton of Abba on my ipod and while I work….and suddenly it dawned on me that I must definitely have an Abba medley for my next dance performance with my troupe. The possibilities are endless. I have been on all the Abba fansites and downloaded tons of costume pictures. Oh my…..so many outrageous and theatrical possibilities. I am compiling a look book and plan on getting the outfits made in Hong Kong. (I just had them make a ballroom dress for me – it took only nine days to have a dress custom made and shipped from Hong Kong to NY – and it was in a bag so tiny that my dad, who received the package, said to me “Sally, it is not possible for your latin dress to be in this bag, the bag isn’t big enough for a decent sized pair of underwear…..and this chinese lady is obviously a rather nasty liar as the customs form says it is second hand and of no value.” Again I digress

But anyway – the Hong Kong dress was amazing and I have high hopes that they will come up with fabulous outfits for everyone in my group – and we definitely range in size and shape

Since news got out that we are going down the Abba road this spring – everyone has been calling me. I am not the only nerd who loves Abba – there are so many closet fans out there. Or so many exhibitionists in waiting….don’t we all just need an opportunity to let our hair down sometimes.

So anyway – if you are out there in the blogosphere reading this, if you live within commuting distance of NYC, if you love to dance, it doesn’t matter if you are very good or not, feel free to get in touch with me. The whole point about my dance troupe is that it speaks to what I consider to be my larger life mission – something I think about everyday when I am in Brazil Bronze. It seems to me that when it comes to aging and self value, women have the short end of the stick. I love to find ways for people to discover themselves in their own best light, to see that they really are beautiful and that their beauty is not dependent on being 20 yrs old or weighing 120 pounds. Through the dance group I like to showcase every side of the woman…..with joy, with laughter, with over the top theatricality. I like to give permission to other women to showcase the side of themself that perhaps they usually keep hidden…but secretly long to let rip.

So this coming february we will start to rehearse twice a week in the evenings. My beautiful husband Alex Tchassov is the teacher – and we have the divine pleasure of having choreography and coaching by my super wonderful teachers Jose Decamps and Joanna Zacharewicz who are 3 times world champion…..and are always so super patient and creative with our group. Together we rehearse for 2 plus months and at the end of April we will head to the Pocono mountains to perform our show in public. It is always an incredible journey. It is so incredible to see what people are able to do when they put their mind to it. It is one of the reasons I really love to dance – because if you think you can’t do something then you can’t – but if you set yourself up that anything is possible – then it generally  is!

could there be a better place to spend thanksgiving than in NYC? I remember when I first moved to America back in 1987 I didn’t really understand the holiday. It seemed like a dress rehearsal for Christmas – with pumpkin pie thrown in.

But now, all these years later, and now that I have my own family, I love this holiday which gives us a chance to reflect on all the things I am thankful for.

This year I got to celebrate the holiday in style. I went with my husband and girls to the annual breakfast and parade watching fiesta at Per Se in the Time Warner building. My little girls got amazing seats on the window ledge overlooking Columbus Circle – and we had the perfect view of all the floats. Per Se had cooked so many delicious treats – the children were in love with all of the gourmet versions of regular cookies – and the servers were so gentile – letting the little girls choose whatever goodies they wanted. It felt so good to be in the centre of NYC, surrounded by friends, enjoying the view.

Next we went to thanksgiving number 2 at my parents home in NJ. Now my mother has been battling emphysema for the past three years and many holidays have been spent in the hospital. So the very fact that we were all at home gathered around the table together was not taken lightly. I am definitely blessed to have such a beautiful family, my parents are the kindest nicest people in the world, the little girls are adorable – and my husband is the best! So good to just be together and to take a moment to hold gratitude in your heart.

Then on to thanksgiving number 3….to our dear friends in Jersey City. My girls had the best time playing drums in the basement, playing monopoly, eating even more dessert…and for my husband and I chance to relax for a while and to reflect on another really great year. We had so much fun making new friends through our dance group, we are in the process of making our documentary, Brazil Bronze is in its’ 7th year of business, we have had so much fun with our family and friends, traveling to dance competitions, camping in the Adirondaks, taking the kids to Disney, getting to help House of Loveness in Zimbabwe….so many beautiful rich experiences to be thankful for…..
