bad crash, good underwear.

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

I am sure my late mother taught many important life lessons but the one I remember daily is to always shave your legs and wear good undies (in case you get into an accident) and always have five pounds on you. I’m not sure how far five pounds will get you. Well, it definitely came in handy yesterday. After a lovely lunch and afternoon shopping with my daughters, we were happily tootling home when the car sped out of control and I saw myself hurtling toward a telegraph pole. There was no time for fear, just the knowledge that something life or death dreadful was going down. My dad and husband were sitting up front and I was sitting inbetween my daughters in the back. I remember seeing the airbags come out and then my dad and husband were really still. I immediately called out to see if everyone was OK. Everyone answered and I yelled to get out of the car quick. OMG it was so scarey and we were all shaking so much. We were by a gas station (thank God we didn’t crash into a gas pump or a person). The next thing I remember was sitting on the floor in the gas station and seeing blood on me – but I didn’t know where it was coming from. My daughter was so upset “What about grandpa’s car?” and I remember telling her “don’t worry about the car, a car is just a thing – the most important thing is we are all alive.” I checked my daughters, they were fine – just marks on their necks from the seat belts. My husaband and dad seemed fine. Relief. I was still shaking like a leaf – and slowly I realized the blood was coming from my head. Just what I needed.

The ambulance came and took me. Poor Georgie and Charlie were really upset – but our amazing friends Annamarie and Robert were on the way to the scene to pick the family up.

At the hospital it was very surreal. They took me into a room in the ER that by crazy coincidence I had been in when my mother first got sick. It was a little chilling. I mentioned it to the nurse and she said “let me move you” – I said that it wasn’t really worth it because between my mother being sick and the time when my little daughter was sick – I have had so many scarey nights in that hospital. She asked me to change into a robe – and can I tell you – by an amazing stroke of luck, last week my darling friend Rebecca had sent me a whole package of the most gorgeous lingerie – because she works for Playboy – so luckily all of my undergarments were immaculate. Honey – I looked so good I could have been in a catalogue…apart from my bleed ing head. The doctor came – he was a piece of work. He said you have to have stitches or I have to staple your head and you have to get a CAT scan. The guy had zero bedside manner.

So I trundled off to get a CAT scan. I was really scared because I was thinking about that whole Natasha Richardson thing. I waited outside the CAT scan room in my hospital gown in a wheel chair and I was really trying to think if my brain was ok. I thought the best way to check my brain was to go over my new Britney Spears choreography. so I sat in the chair and was trying to go through the moves in my head….no one was around in that hallway so I just got up from the chair and gave it a little run through ” A five, a six, a seven and eight!” I felt reassured…I could remember the Britney routine, and it is really complicated with lots of syncopations – I got back into my wheelchair. Luckily noone had noticed – otherwise I might have been transferred to the phsychiatric ward.

A while later the results came through and the dry as a biscuit doctor told me my brain was normal. Woo hoo!! That was just the validation I needed – I had been worrying about my brain for a while. It was time for him to staplee my head. I asked him what it entailed and he said he needed to shave a patch of my head. I said “NO. I am not up for that”. He told me it was the best thing to do. I said “I can’t, I am a dancer – I can’t be running around town with a bald patch.” He gave my Playboy pocket book a second glance – and I bet he was thinking that a forty-something like me was a rather unlikely exotic dancer. Actually he looked at me like I was crazy – but then the guy had about a total of three hairs on his whole head so there was no way he could relate to me and my hair and my issues. I asked him if it would be a good idea to put a bunch of neosporin on my head – and he dejectedly told me it would be a good idea and released me into the world.

Hallelujah! We are all alive. I have a sense that I had better really focus myself and sprinkle some good and kindness in the world.

Last night when I got home I got some pictures emailed to me

Spring, Snow and Britney Spears…

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Snow and hail in NYC…and everyone is complaining. I don’t mind the rain and snow – it cleans the earth up and keeps our reservoirs full. I just felt bad for the little spring flowers that were sprouting – but this morning they look fine. It is funny to see snow drops dusted with real snow.

It feels as if lots of new exciting things are in the air. Joy and I are working on some new things. That is the thing with sunless tanning – it never sits still, there is always something new, something more sophisticated to test and tinker with.

There are so many fun things coming to a head. Tonight I am going to the launch party for the Jason Bell book “An Englishman In New York”.

An Englishman in New York by Jason BellIt is so exciting – when you take part in something and it actually comes to fruition. This is a book about all different English people who live and work in NYC – some famous, some regular (and some fabulous and regular – like me!). I am looking to actually seeing the book.

My burlesque group The Pink Chardonnays have been performing all over with their Elvis number. We debuted at Don Hills and then everyone asked us to perform it everywhere.

We performed in The Chelsea Room, at Mama Gena’s Mastery weekend – and this weekend we are performing in Philadelphia. It has been so much fun. But it is time to move on and start something new. We have lots of cools shows in the works and we have started choreographing a whole new number that is a tribute to Britney Spears. Yes. Hear it and believe. What is more we have had so many ladies coming to us who want to dance with us. Fun is contagious – we all need more of it. Next week Pink Champagne and I will be performing our new number (Lady Gaga – beautiful and dirty Rich) at Sway Lounge. We often dance with this amazing cabaret called Paper Dolls – which is the creative genius of our amazing friend Kiki Lewis. This Tuesday 3/29th the show is at 9.30pm – it is really adorable if you want to stop by and see some burlesque in the flesh.

So I am keeping busy – looking forward to going to Philly this weekend with my friends. I heard there is an amazing exhibition about Gucci at the Philly museum of Art. Does that count as culture?

Stay toasty and warm…pretty soon spring will really spring. Sallyxo

gym, tanning, laundry?

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

The Holy Trinity of “The Jersey Shore”. I think my holy trinity is tanning, gym, home work. Tanning being Brazil Bronze, everything to do with paying attention to the salon and all the fun new products we have in the works. Gym – being working out A LOT – from teaching mega amounts of Burlesque Bikini Bootcamp. Home work is that constant battle, as a working mom, trying to stay abreast of my kids homework. Home work is a nightmare. I didn’t like it as a kid, and I hate it worse as an adult. I think the teachers invent things just for the purpose of torturing the parents. I am forever getting notes telling me how I have failed in some manner or other.

The salon is really fun right now. Lots of cool projects. Someone, who shall remain nameless… who has a really cute reality show – just asked us to help develop a new product line. It feels like a really good synergy – and we have an idea for a REALLY cool new product. So we are really excited to see if we can tie it all together. Then we are working on a project to design incentives for teens to try spray tanning rather than using traditional sun beds. It is an exciting time.

Burlesque Bikini Bootcamp is crazy  busy. All of the classes have been packed. I love it because I am meeting lots of new people – and having fun. Our performance group “The Pink Chardonnays” had a wonderful debut of our Elvis number at Don Hills. We had over 300 people show up and raised money for a friend in need. The girls were such rockstars that they got invited to perform at Mama Gena’s Mastery and The Chelsea room. Three amazing performances in a week. I just feel incredibly grateful to be in the company of such wonderful women, and to have had the opportunity to create the kind of memories that will last a lifetime.

Then the weekend comes around and I have had to wrestle with the homework. I mean it is a joke. My whole family wanted to go to the east village to have lunch and shop in the polish stores. Could you believe the wretched homework project for a ten year old child was so much drama that the entire family had to spend the day as victim to it. I am beginning to see why home schooling  could be of value. And then – when I go to school – I see lots of projects that it is completely transparent that the parents have done the work for the kids. Asinine.  Oh – well – enough blogging for me – I have to get back to the science project. Otherwise I am going to be in trouble….
